Obituary for Edwina Ann Whitten Kellman Frias

Edwina Whitten was born in Cumberland Hospital in Brooklyn on May 1, 1944.  She was the fourth of five daughters and two sons of Arnold and Catherine Whitten.  She peacefully transitioned during the early evening of January 11, 2019.

She is survived by her husband Johnny, her sisters, Arnoline & Darcel, Brothers in Law Tommy, Bill, and Alex, children, Catherine and Keith Kellman, her nieces Karen & Leida, her nephews, Terry, Kevin, Barry, Roger, Jason, and Trevor,  her Grandchildren, Jordan & Alyssa, Nimah & Ashley and “her babies” her great grandchildren Charlie, Elijah and Xander and countless other much loved family members.

Mom had a great sense of humor, which could at times be risqué to the delight of those around her.  She believed in the sanctity of family first, last and always, and you didn’t have to be a blood relative to be considered family.  She was a woman who loved and felt deeply.  Those who knew her best knew she had no issue with telling when you overstepped, and it was not always in a kind and gentle manner.  Let’s not forget about her sense of fashion, the woman could dress! She was a woman who would give you her all with the expectation that you pay it forward.

Many a night a friend of ours bunked on our couch, broke bread with us and cried on her shoulder.  Long story short, she was taught by her parents that taking care of others in need was the only way to live life.

Mom said when she left this earth, she wanted a party, not a funeral.  Hence the celebration will be a little different from the norm.  You shouldn’t be surprised, Mom always did march to the beat of different drummer. She wanted music and dancing, laughing, and most of all she wanted everyone to show love to each other not just in this space, but years and years later.  S

he specifically requested that we only believe the “juicy parts” of any stories that will be told about her. The family would like to give a special thank you to Ana Villaobos, the woman who started as Mom’s aide and became her friend.  Ana spent many unpaid hours tending to, visiting with and just talking and listening to our Mom.

For this there is no repayment, yet we shall be forever in her debt.  Ana sent a text Monday night “tell my daughter not to let Thelma put red lipstick on me for my funeral”.   Although Mom’s earthly remains will be laid to rest, best believe her spirit will be forever a presence in our lives.
