Obituary for Donald Eugene Tucker

Born Donald Eugene Tucker, but lived by (Dad, D.T. Pop, Grandpee, Pa, Grandpa and Uncle Donald) entered into this world on September 1st 1931 to Thomas & Wilhelmina Tucker.  Thomas Jr, (Tommy), Donald, Robert(Bobby) and Kenny were fondly called the “Tucker Boys”, and when you saw them, be wary!

As we look upon his life from beginning to end, it’s evident that here stood a giant amongst men, and in retrospect, we see that his measure was not determined by his slight physical stature, but by his character, integrity, self-determination, selflessness and altruistic spirit.  These are the elements by which all people should be measured and not by physical stature, income, occupation, education, social status, or any other potentially spiritually short-sighted measures.

Donald truly was an overcomer, who from early in his life had a sense of determination that allowed him to boldly stare down many of the obstacles in life that can make a person stand frozen in their tracks.  When doctors said that this bedridden child who was being homeschooled probably wouldn’t live past age twelve, he reached within, stared down that giant and said “No”!  Under the watchful eyes of his older brother, Tommy,  Donald would walk the track running a quarter-mile at a time, then from a quarter-mile to a mile, and from a mile to a couple of miles.

After graduating from Jamaica High School, Donald felt an obligation to serve his country and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War.  During his tour of duty, Donald earned his “Screaming Eagle” insignia by becoming a member of the 11th Airborne Division.

He also received the National Defense Service Medal.  Due to Donald’s small stature, (which was joked about often) he was assigned as a gunner with the tank division.  Donald was later assigned to HqIII Fort Mac Arthur, California, where he served out the rest of his tour until February 8th, 1954 when he was honorably discharged.   On September 25, 1954, he married his sweetheart, Winifred (Bunny)Viola Underwood.

The family moved from Sound View projects in the “Boogie Down” aka the Bronx and moved to St. Albans, Queens. Donald was a truly faithful husband and dedicated father to his four children, Donald Anthony, Wayne Jeffrey, Craig Baron, and Renee’ Deidre’.

This giant amongst men and his wife kept their children on the straight and narrow path in spite of the many temptations of this fast-paced world. The family was extremely important to Donald and he instilled values and “Tucker” traditions to his children.

Donald was employed at Harlem Hospital and left to join the ranks of the New York City Transit Authority until he retired. Upon retirement, Donald devoted his time and services as a sexton for Allen Christian School and later St. Albans the Martyr.

He also received his Nursing Certificate. In Donald’s spare time, he enjoyed caring for his seven grandchildren, traveling, gardening, cooking, and passing on family traditions.

To cherish his loving memories are his three sons Donald (Loria) of Freeport, Wayne (Sharon) of Uniondale, Craig of Atlanta and one daughter Renee’ (Andre’) of Baldwin; seven grandchildren: Gena, Teela, Vaughn, Monica, Alicia, Jasmin and Deidre’; two sister-in-laws Doris and Edythe; a former in law Carla, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Dad’s creed, “It’s ok to turn the other cheek, but never show your behind”!
